Description:

In an era where new energy creation is critical, Bowman's book is meant to inform and to guide. "The Green Guide to Power: Thinking Outside the Grid" is not a "good-guy"- "bad-guy" story. It discusses the importance of energy creation and energy distribution both globally and here in the US. Without minimizing conservation efforts, Bowman raises awareness that new alternative energy sources are in dire need. The immediacy of the energy challenge is finding all of us. The inability to access reliable, cost effective and carbon neutral power is affecting individuals, businesses and the planet at large.

"Thinking Outside the Grid" is designed to help the lay person understand the energy conundrum.

Bowman's first book, "Business Continuity Planning for Data Centers and Systems" helps professionals in their quest to site and build data centers, and to plan for disaster recovery. This book has assisted CEO's, CFO's and IT managers to maintain an efficient business plan in the event of a disaster. Bowman includes information on Acts Of God, the different tiers of design, the challenges of power and cooling, and effective site selection.

"Thinking Outside the Grid" is an easy to read, primer for those who want to educate themselves in the field of energy conservation and creation. The book discusses in detail the following:

* The history of power in the United States
* Different Generating Sources--Thinking Outside the Grid
* Centralized and Decentralized Power Generation
* Post Deregulation Realities
* Best Practices of Power Conservation and Creation
* Data Center and Mission Critical Power Needs
* Sustainable and Commercially Viable Power Sources
* Financial Impacts of the Changing Power Paradigm
* Global Warming
* The Government's Role
* Acts of God, Human Intervention and Power

1This book is a train wreckAug 22, 2009

I will try to keep this review brief. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. I am a regular Amazon book purchaser, typically buying 3-4 books per month and I have never written a review until today. Where do I begin? I am no english teacher (I am an engineer in the power industry) but the grammar was BAD. The author seemed to have issues maintaining a consistent theme/topic throughout an entire paragraph (much less chapter). He sometimes repeated himself (nearly identical paragraphs) and would break out into juvenile side thoughts. Literally, the language and writing was so poor and distracting, it was difficult to really understand what the author was trying to convey. I can't believe that an editor reviewed this book.

This leads to my second observation (perhaps more important). Much of the data, analysis and suggestions were pie in the sky, without much real substance. In fact, I get the impression that the author is on the marketing end of the business because there really is a lack of depth, both to the style of writing and the substance.

Please do not buy this book. If you were duped into purchasing this book, please, I know you may be a little embarrassed (I know I was) but come out of the shadows and help stop someone else from making the same mistake!

5An Intuitive ReadFeb 19, 2009

Bowman's writing is clearly an accomplishment from one who has direct interface with the energy problems facing this world. It is intelligent, yet an easy read for "us simple minded" people. A thought provoking book on our looming energy crisis. Highly recommended!

4Great read though completely uneditedOct 20, 2009
By Steven J. Willson "sjwill23"
An excellent read - only problem is the book was not read by an editor. Never seen anything like it before. The grammar is so bad some parts are hard to understand. The last paragraph in chapter 1 page 40 is copied and pasted from the second paragraph on page 37! Weird things like this all over the book. Like I said the information in the book is great but it is a comedy show to read.

This is by far the clearest explanation of the energy landscape I've read to date. The style of communincation makes easy reading of a complex subject. It offer up practical solutions to resolve issues that need to be acted on today. I recommend this as a guide to help decision makers sort out the complex alternatives facing them for cost effective "Green" energy solutions.

Mr Bowman's book is a reading pleasure sprinkled with "Bowmanese" insights and information for anyone concerned with our energy dependence. Complicated issues and future observations are explained in detail and with clarity.
