Are you interested in adding wind power to your off-grid electric system, but have been put off by the high cost of equipment and installation? Well, now you can build and install your own wind turbine! Harnessing the wind can be a tricky business, but in this groundbreaking book the authors provide step-by-step, illustrated instructions for building a wind generator in a home workshop. Even if you don't plan on building your own turbine, this book is packed with valuable information for anyone considering wind energy. It covers the basic physics of how the energy in moving air is turned into electricity, and most importantly, will give you a realistic idea of what wind energy can do for you--and what it can't. Full-scale, actual size blueprints for the 10-foot diameter wind turbine featured in this book are also available from Amazon to help you along in the construction process. Same book sent twiceJun 05, 2010 This book was sent twice though I ordered it only once. I had to pay for the return.Ughh.
Excelent book by the way. My hat off to the author.
Get this book...Apr 19, 2010 This book is a must read if you want to build your own windmill. Even if you don't want to build a windmill, you will learn tons about electricity and how small windmills work. This is a multi-discipline book, with information on steel fabrication, woodworking, magnets, electricity, wiring, and more. I bought this book after I read it because it is that good! It is easy to understand, and makes the project do-able.
Good information, Organized, bit snideMar 03, 2010 Quite a bit of useful information, and reasonably well organized. We were able to read and make sense of the topic. Formulas were useful and the explanation of electrical generation were well thought out. Their use of the basic formulas was crisp and easy to understand. You really can do a lot with this.
It would have been better if they could have avoided sounding snide. I'm not sure what the hidden agenda was, but what came out was a tone of "we are smarter than everyone". The discussion of horizontal vs vertical axis windmills was especially snippy. I expect enthusiasm for the topic, I don't appreciate doing so by pushing everyone else down.
So all in all, I would recommend it. As I said, the information is great and well organized.

Living off the grid does have some risksJan 02, 2010 I found Homebrew Wind Power quite informative starting with the concepts of how electricty is generated from rotational force. There is an extensive section on how to shape the blades for the most efficent performance. There are graphs showing height above the ground, a section on testing a wind turbine, maintenance and so on. This is not a book, however, for those lacking talent in fabrication since a lot of machining and assembly is necessary. Such an endevoir is not without its risks, but living off the grid and going green has its own rewards. Humor is also part of the book with coffee stains intentionally left in blank areas of various pages.
