Description:

Dwindling petroleum supplies and growing environmental concerns are significantly impacting the cost of petro-fuel and its infrastructure. The search for alternative fuel sources has led to ethanol, a gasoline substitute that is already in the marketplace as Gasohol and E-85. But large-scale production of corn-based ethanol is controversial as it threatens the world’s food supply. There are alternatives, however: Brazil uses sugar cane, which is up to six times more productive in energy conversion.

After the energy crisis of the 1970s, there was a lot of misinformation about the cost of individual ethanol production. In order to achieve energy independence from gasoline, ethanol lends itself to small-scale production, and especially to cooperative ventures in rural communities, often using “waste” feedstock.

Alcohol Fuel is a practical, grassroots book that will give readers all the information they need, covering every aspect of making and using ethanol for fuel, including:

  • Permitting and planning
  • Budgeting and setup
  • Sourcing feedstocks
  • Finding and building distillation equipment
  • Storage and safety
  • Practical applications for converting motor vehicles, farm equipment, and space-heating systems

The practical, user-friendly information on basic equipment needs, fermentation recipes, and distillation designs will be of interest to readers looking for information, as well as to those ready to make the switch.

Richard Freudenberger was research director of Mother Earth News, where he managed the Alcohol Fuel Program and developed solar and renewable solar and energy projects. He is publisher and technical editor of BackHome magazine and lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

5It's like "Alcohol Can Be a Gas" for adults.May 18, 2010
By Matt
This is a realistic, well written and well put together book on small scale ethanol production. It is devoid of the juvenile partisan political nonsense that makes "Alcohol Can Be a Gas" so unbearable to read for anyone firmly grounded in the real world. If you are serious about making alcohol fuel this book will tell you what to expect and most of what you need to know. If you are interested in Utopian communal farming and somehow trying to squeeze 10,000 gallons of ethanol per acre from cattails or fermenting that 5,000 gallons of organic cheese whey that you have in your back yard, "Alcohol Can Be a Gas" would be the better choice.

525 years of research and practical wisdomDec 10, 2009

If you are considering producing ethanol for fuel on a small to medium
scale, you need to buy this book. In the 1970s, Richard Freudenberger
was a one of the Mother Earth News pioneers in alternative fuel
research and the book contains a quarter century worth of practical
experience, research, and wisdom on every aspect of local ethanol
production for fuel. The book is an excellent introduction to the
newcomer and a valuable reference for the initiated.

4Alcohol fuel,easier to read in bed than "Alcohol can be a Gas"Jan 11, 2010
By G. A. Baxter
Alcohol fuel is a very well written guide to making small scale alcohol fuel. The author obviously has alot of experience with this subject.I bought it for a different perspective from "Alcohol can be a Gas" which it is.If I had to choose I would go for "Alcohol can be a gas" first because it contains much more information. However Alcohol fuel is still a very useful book for anyone seriously considering making their own fuel.
